Visits for Young People
We welcome visits by schools and youth groups and offer bespoke programmes for children aged from 4-14. A visit will include practical activities focussing on aspects of the mill’s operation and history, and a tour of the mill from the ground floor up to the highest level.
The activities and tours are run by former teachers and are very much hands-on active learning experiences tailored to children from key stages 1 – 3.
As well as schools, we welcome other youth groups such as scouts, cubs, and home-educated children.
A visit will usually consist of approximately 90 minutes of guided activity plus whatever arrival/departure time groups require. Visits can be arranged during the day or in the evening. Groups of up to 30 can be accommodated at one time, with larger groups split into two with the activity and tour running concurrently.
The mill has one WC (with disabled access) available to visitors. Due to the nature of the building, access for disabled people is limited to the ground floor, but a virtual tour of the rest of the mill is available. Visitors will need to bring their own refreshments if required. There is no heating, so warm clothes are advised for winter visits.
There is a coach drop-off point a minute’s walk away, and there is parking for two minibuses on site.
The mill is a functional industrial building and the tour involves climbing a number of steep ladders: children need therefore to be fully supervised by visiting adult members while on site. A risk assessment is available for group leaders.
Please email windmillatwindmillhill@gmail.com if you would like more information on prices, the activities, or to explore dates for a group visit. Group leaders are welcome to attend free of charge on one of the regular Sunday open days for a reconnaissance visit.
Please note that the mill machinery is not normally operated during youth group visits.
