Sponsor a cog

Why aren’t the sweeps turning?

We are replacing the cogs on the brake wheel.

Why do the cogs have to be replaced?

When the sweeps turn they revolve the shaft on which they are mounted. The brake wheel is fixed on to the shaft and as it turns it transmits power, through the wooden cogs, to the iron cogged stone nut on the quant which turns the upper stone. We found that the cogs of the brake wheel were vibrating due to an incorrect profile, so we are replacing them all.

How long will this take?

The windmill volunteers are working as hard as they can but there are 104 cogs and each one must be individually fitted — so it will take some time.

How can I help?
